Uses of Hypnotic Speech

by Rob Andrews

Language is powerful. Although you may not be aware of it, your choice of words shows people how you view the world.

Experts tell us that people not only use language to describe the world they see, but language and the words used actually help to create the world people experience.

In what way is this true?

Your subconscious mind actually tries to look at reality in a way consistent with the words you speak.

So with such a powerful tool on the tips of our tongues you can both shape the way others view the world by carefully choosing how and what you say.

How is this done?

You use covert hypnosis. You can actually cause a hypnotic induction by choosing the right words and tone of voice. I'm not speaking about a complete hypnosis session like you see in the movies. Rather you use the right hypnotic words and tones to talking straight to someone's subconscious while having what appears to be just a regular conversation.

So you can subliminally influence how people act and think by planting certain hypnotic seeds in their mind during an otherwise normal conversation.

Saying the right things

Reaching the subconscious mind is not as hard as you may think. One of the best hypnotists ever, Milton Erickson, developed a model for what I will call conversational hypnosis that has three basic steps. This is called the Milton Model. The three stages of the Milton Model are:

Stage 1.

Look for signs that reveal how the person views something. Notice the language used. What words does she use to describe her feelings. After you spot the pattern, use her experiences to lead her attention to her own inner experiences.

One way to do this is to ask questions like What was that like for you? or How do you feel about that?

This focusing inward allows them to understand how seeing the world the way they do makes them feel.

Stage 2.

This second stage of the Milton conversational hypnosis model is to distract the listener's conscious mind. This is done by using complicated and unclear language.

Milton Erickson spoke using words sounding very similar, but with entirely different meanings. A few good examples are here/hear, write/right, wonder/wander and sale/sail.

Milton deployed double binds to present only the set of options he desired. He'd say things like: We don't know if you'll begin a trance not or in 10 minutes.

This kind of language gives the mind no choice but to fall into a trance, and it uses an embedded command to do so now, or in 5 minutes.

Incorrectly using words, distracts and confuses the conscious brain and causes it to turn inward for help from the subconscious brain.

These are a few of the Milton Model methods of distracting the conscious mind. I'm not sure if you want to learn about the Milton Model now or later :-)
Stage 3.

Finally, once the conscious mind has been sufficiently distracted, the final stage in the Milton Model is to uses the resources of the subconscious mind.

There are a few methods of doing this. The simplest is to embed commands in your sentences, so they are not apparent to the conscious brain, but will be perceived by the subconscious brain.

Here are some examples:

–I don't know if you will do the dishes now –You can do this, can't you? –You will do that, haven't you? (Yes, this is intentional it makes no sense to your conscious mind, but it does make sense to your subconscious)

So you may be asking yourself, self if I just say confusing things to people, or things that have embedded commands in them, then I can get people to do whatever I want them to?!

The answer is maybe

The important point of conversational hypnosis is that you can only make someone do something that does not violate their beliefs and values.

You are able to use conversational hypnosis to give commands to someone's subconscious mind, but it will take a good deal more than just conversational hypnosis to actually change her value or belief system.

With practice, you will greatly improve your ability to use conversational hypnosis to subliminally influence people around you
