Are You Scared of Hypnosis?

From movies or on TV episodes, we have seen countless scenes where hypnosis is used to manipulate innocent to follow commands by a hypnotist. But does hypnosis really work that way?

Before I move on to answer the question, I would first introduce some background about hypnosis. Hypnosis is intended to change personal belief, and by this way a subject can be healed or recover from psychological problems. Hypnosis can also help a person to exert stronger influence on others in social situations on subconscious level. However, in any hypnosis cases, the subject cannot violate his or her own moral values. These are subconsciously bind to that person and immovable to external efforts to change them. In fact, during clinical hypnosis to heal a subject, if he or she is resistant and not cooperative, the hypnotist involved cannot do any means to help, even master hypnotists are helpless in such situation. The subject must be free of sufficient conscious thoughts before he or she can enter into a trance state, where suggestions will be used by then.

Is there any danger in hypnosis? Yes, but it will only occur as a result of total relaxation. The awareness of the subject may not be fully awaken after a hypnotic session. If he or she participates in activities that require strong alertness, there may be a real danger, such as driving or other dangerous activities. However, with an experienced hypnotist, a hypnotic session is safely closed with suitable awakening method, and the subject will slowly recover his or her consciousness in a short period of time.

There is also another frequently asked question: will I lose my consciousness during hypnosis? Definitely no! You are still awake during hypnosis. But your alertness may be reduced to a lower level, and you are fully attended to the instructions given by your hypnotist. Even if the hypnotist does not end the session appropriately, your subconscious will naturally bring you back your external focus. You will not be stuck in a hypnotic state for life, as depicted in some horror movies.

You should by now realize the truths of hypnosis at work, or even get interested in learning hypnosis. Be frank, it takes years of practice and studies to become a true master in the hypnosis field. However, hypnosis is beneficial to many people, in particular those who are suffering from psychological problems or addiction. Hypnosis can help relieve their burden in the minds, by relocating their focus to achieve the long term goal.
